With
it's eight kilometres of coastline, with beaches with
transparent water and golden sand, Zahara de los Atunes – which
gives it's name to the wealth of tasty fish - presents
itself before the happy visitor, hospitable, hot and
full of history. The walk along the main street at
sunset is obligatory for those that want an appetiser
before dinner. There are dozens of typical bars and
restaurants for this, with a suprising variety of tapas
and full of laughter and ambience. Many European citizens
choose this place for their holidays or for second
residence in the winter, since the local hot climate
averages 17º C - this the "Zahareno" spirit
which is typical of the people of this region - happy,
extrovert and absolutely perfect for making friends. Enter
the Foro
of Zahara de los Atunes, get to know people from
the area.
Every
street of the town is full of history. Just like other
municipalities of the region, the autumn and winter
seasons bring with it the possibility of solitary walks
along it's beaches (though the summer season is not
over-crowded). During this time, the late afternoons
become even more beautiful, because of the different
light and temperatures from the rest of the peninsula..
The
most urbanised zone of Zahara is Atlanterra with numerous
constructions of apartments, urbanisations and chalets
(like the big chalets of Playa
de los Alemanes) proving that this zone
is expanding quickly. Yes it is true that the lower
part of Atlanterra is where the main beach restaurants and hotels
are located, as Playa
de los Alemanes lacks any
ameneties.
So
you must walk to the beach, using small paths between
the houses and the end of the road in Faro
de Camarinal (Faro de Gracia), giving you a better perspective to
be able to enjoy the environment.
From
this enclave, Punta Camarinal, (Término
Municipal de Tarifa) you can see Parque
Natural del Estrecho (see Naturaleza for more information).
The lighthouse is situated in a legendary watchtower,
which also shelters a former military "bunker" with
a gangplank where they say - long ago they put heavy
guns to defend any invasions by water and air. In Atlanterra,
another bunker exists which is also a wonderful place..
